Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutritionist?
A registered dietitian (RD) is a licensed, credentialed healthcare provider who has completed a supervised clinical program, passed a national board exam, and is qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy for conditions like eating disorders, diabetes, and IBS. "Nutritionist" is not a protected title in Texas and can be used by anyone. Every provider at Khan RD is a licensed dietitian.
How much does nutrition counseling cost?
For most clients, very little. More than 95% of our clients use in-network insurance benefits and pay either $0 or just their copay per session. If you're out of network, we provide superbills you can submit for possible reimbursement. You can see full details on our insurance and pricing page, and we'll verify your specific benefits before your first visit.
Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to see a dietitian?
No referral or diagnosis is required to book. Many clients come to us simply because something feels off with food, digestion, or energy. If your specific insurance plan requires a referral for coverage, we'll help you sort that out before your first appointment.
What happens during the first appointment?
Your first session is a thorough, unhurried conversation. Your dietitian reviews your health history, current eating patterns, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals — no judgment and no food rules. You'll leave with clear first steps rather than a generic handout, and a sense of what working together will look like.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you're working on. Some clients meet a handful of times to address a specific issue, while eating disorder recovery, RED-S, or chronic condition management usually benefit from ongoing support over several months. We'll talk openly about frequency and revisit it as you progress — you're never locked into a fixed package.
Do you write meal plans?
Sometimes, when they're genuinely useful — but a rigid meal plan isn't the default. Our focus is helping you build flexible, realistic eating habits that fit your schedule, medical needs, and preferences, so you're not dependent on a printout to know what to eat.
What conditions and specialties do you cover?
We specialize in eating disorder recovery, ARFID and food avoidance, sports nutrition and RED-S, gut health and IBS, diabetes and metabolic health, pediatric and teen nutrition, and general medical nutrition therapy. If you're unsure where you fit, reach out and we'll point you in the right direction.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book a discovery call online anytime, call us at 512-953-3919, or send your insurance details and we'll verify your benefits before reaching out to you. Sessions are available in person in Central Austin and via telehealth across Texas.
